For so many people, financial stress and “money silence” can cause unhealthy relationships with spouses, children and others. My wife is a NICU nurse, finance isn’t her forte. Although she trusts me completely to manage all-things-money for our family, I still believe firmly in the importance of consulting her on every financial decision, and it deeply strengthens our relationship. When finances are in disarray or left in “silence,” many parts of our personal lives can be impacted, including job performance, family relationships and marriages, and even our mental and physical health.
While we as advisors work diligently to try to make your financial lives easier, we know that money and finances can be a constant source of stress. Regardless of socio-economic backgrounds, three out of four Americans cite finances as the No. 1 stress in their lives, according to a CreditWise survey.
April is National Financial Literacy month. As we continue to work closely with you and your family on your own financial circumstances, we also would like to share some additional resources to help you or someone close to you ease the anxiety that money and finances can bring. Please feel free to share these with anyone you know who might be challenged by financial stress.
In this first article, a distinguished financial coach outlines how to identify and plug money leaks (impulsive Amazon spending, always treating friends to dinner or drinks, or incurring overdraft or late fees) to help boost your overall financial well-being.
Money psychologist Kathleen Kingsbury offers valuable tips in an episode of the Keeping the Well in Well-thy podcast about how to begin more productive dialogues about your finances.
We’d also like to let you know about the Money Baggage podcast that’s aimed at helping young adults learn about and gain control of their finances, covering topics such as debt, savings, credit cards, student loans and the costs of engaging in retail therapy.
Please enjoy and share these resources and know that we are always available if you’d like to discuss the money challenges in your world. Beyond that, we welcome you to introduce us to your family and friends who might like some help navigating their finances – we would love partner with them in their financial journey too.
