Each October, the U.S. observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month to heighten awareness and support research funding for identifying causes and discovering new treatments for breast cancer. Every October, I am reminded to be grateful that my family’s experience with this disease wasn’t a tragic one.
I’ll never forget the day when my mother called me to notify me of her diagnosis almost exactly 10 years ago – Stage 0 breast cancer, seemingly out of nowhere. She was only 51 at the time, and though we were fortunate her doctors discovered it early, it was still an emotionally turbulent time for my family. After the initial shock had settled, I began thinking about my own health, and the increased probability that I may develop breast cancer in the future. By having a first-degree relative with breast cancer, my risk for developing breast cancer almost doubled.
My mother certainly wasn’t the first family member of mine to be diagnosed with cancer, as her own mother had battled the same disease, and her father (my grandfather) had passed away from cancer years prior. All these things combined led my mother and I to meet with a genetic counselor for some testing and an analysis of our family tree. It turns out my mother was negative for any mutation of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes (the most common cause of hereditary breast cancer) which gave us a bit of relief – but the counselor still suggested that both my older sister and I schedule mammograms early, at age 35 versus the normally recommended 40.
While women over 50 are statistically more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer, the reality is that the disease can affect women of any age. It’s crucial for women to recognize potential signs of breast cancer and understand how often they should undergo screenings. Staying Aware: The Importance of Breast Cancer Screenings provides insights into risk factors, symptoms, and screening options.
Aside from being upsetting news for the patient, a breast cancer diagnosis can have a significant impact on the mental health of the patient and their family. Many patients experience sadness, anxiety, and fear, highlighting the importance of a strong support system during their journey to recovery. I’m so thankful my mother has since been cancer-free, but I also know that without the support of her family and friends, her journey would’ve gone a lot differently.
Victoria Smart, Senior Vice President of Mission for Susan G. Komen, discusses what patients can expect during treatment and offers emotional coping strategies. She also shares best practices for early detection and updates on current advancements in breast cancer research, in this episode of Hightower’s “Keeping the Well in Well-thy.”
As I am rapidly approaching 35 (and the time of my first mammogram), I encourage you to share these resources with your friends and family to remind them of the importance of annual breast cancer screenings – they could truly save a life.
Sincerely,
Digital Marketing Manager
