Deciphering Normal Aging vs. Concerning Behavior

By Emily Drake

Along with its rising temperatures and graduations, June is National Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. Alzheimer’s Disease International estimates that 10 million new cases of dementia develop around the world each year, equating to about one person every three seconds.

As an advisor serving aging adults for over 30 years and a member of the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging’s Board for over 20 years, I know firsthand that the number is even more alarming when you consider the many family members, loved ones and caregivers that a single diagnosis impacts.

Given the statistics, it’s not surprising that many of us are concerned about someone who has been acting differently lately. Or perhaps we seem to be frequently losing our train of thought, car keys or reading glasses (this is why I have so many pairs!). It can be challenging to differentiate between what is normal forgetfulness as part of aging, as opposed to what could be signs of a more serious condition.

In this article, a professional from the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging outlines several common situations and describes whether such an event or reaction should be followed up with medical attention.

We also share with you a Keeping the Well in Well-thy podcast episode that offers tips for helping you keep your brain active and alert. Dr. Cynthia Green explains how cognitive vitality can help us create healthier life spans.

Please enjoy and share these resources with family members or friends who could use this guidance. Also, please know that we’d like to hear from you if this is a challenge you or a loved one increasingly face.

To brain health!
