Investing in Travel

The benefits of travel are truly priceless, giving you an opportunity to disconnect from your routine, immerse yourself in new cultures, try incredible food, and return with a new perspective. More than just a getaway, travel can be a transformational experience that enriches your well-being, expands your worldview, and creates a lasting impact.

That said, time and money are finite, so making the most of your travel investment matters. Amie O’Brien, founder of VLX Travel (named a 2025 “A-List Travel Advisor” by Travel + Leisure), shares three key ways to ensure your travel experiences are not only meaningful, but also deeply rewarding.

  1. Be intentional about the experience you want.
While it’s tempting to chase deals online, Amie encourages travelers to start by identifying how they want to feel during and after a trip. Do you want to relax, recharge, connect with nature, dive into a new culture, or push your comfort zone? From there, build your itinerary around that intention. “Choosing the right destination and accommodations isn’t just about luxury,” she says. “It’s about how a place can shape your experience.” She also notes that thoughtful planning often leads to more authentic interactions with local communities, many of which rely on tourism for economic support.

  2. Choose destinations that expand your perspective.
Whether it’s exploring the temples of Cambodia, sailing through the fjords of Norway, or visiting a township in South Africa, Amie encourages travelers to step outside their everyday lens. She recalls leading a group of women on a luxury trip to South Africa. “The safari and scenery were unforgettable,” she says, “but what stayed with them most was visiting a local community project. It grounded the entire experience and gave the trip real emotional depth.”

  3. Travel with impact in mind.
Being a responsible traveler doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort. It means aligning your choices with purpose. Whether through staying at eco-conscious properties or choosing tour partners that give back, your travel dollars can make an impact. One example: Uthando’s “Love Tour” in Cape Town, which supports grassroots development in underserved communities. VLX Travel also donates a portion of its proceeds from Africa trips to Bread and Water for Africa®. “It’s about making a meaningful connection between our travelers and the places they visit,” Amie explains.
