You Can Change a Life

Celebrating Mentors

A mentor is someone who gives her time to advise more junior professionals in her field. She shares her knowledge, experience, and insights, provides direction, and offers words of encouragement. Mentors change lives.

This past summer, Luma Wealth’s interns benefited from conversations they had with several women leaders in financial services who shared their perspectives and offered guidance.

Here are some of the lessons about a career in financial services that our interns learned from the mentors we celebrate today:

Yonhee C. Gordon
JMG Financial Group

Learn something new from everyone you meet.

Yonhee said that she makes it a point to learn something new from individuals she meets, especially during the hiring process at her firm. This allows her to gauge whether the firm is a good fit for the applicant and guide them in the right direction if it is not.

Anne Richie
The Mezzanine Fund

Make a difference by helping women and minority owned businesses.

Anne recognizes the gender disparity in the workforce and uses her experience in banking to help women and minority business owners receive the resources they need to grow their businesses.

Stephanie Link
Hightower Advisors

Do your homework; and ensure your voice is heard.

When Stephanie began her career as a trader, she was one of only three women at her firm. She quickly realized the importance of speaking up and expressing her opinions. Stephanie stressed doing your homework, so you always know what you want to say and have the confidence to say it.

Kelly Baldoni
Impax Asset Management

Help your mentor help you.

Kelly stressed the importance of finding a mentor who is right for you to guide you in the right direction. And being organized and knowing what you want to achieve will make it easier for your mentor to help you.

Barbara Archer
Hightower Advisors

Enjoy your journey because you may not end up where you expect.

Barbara began her career with the hopes of joining the NASA Space Program and is now a financial advisor at Hightower. She says that it’s okay to end up somewhere different than you anticipated, but you should enjoy the journey and learn along the way.

Lazetta Rainey Braxton

2050 Wealth Partners

Help make financial planning more accessible.

Coming from a modest-income family herself, Lazetta knows what it’s like to be financially constrained. She co-founded 2050 Wealth Partners with Rianka Dorsainvil to make planning more accessible to underserved and overlooked populations. She hopes that other women who enter the financial services industry will help expand financial planning to a wider audience

Our goal is to empower women and girls and we thank the change-makers who took the time to guide Reema and Esther. If you’re interested in improving your own financial literacy, please join our mailing list!
