When Women Help Women Succeed
Are you familiar with the ‘Shine Theory’? It’s a catch phrase coined by Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman (co-hosts of the podcast Call Your Girlfriend) who argue that jealousy and competition among women is pointless – because when women collaborate everyone shines.
We can learn from the examples these and other women have set, and help each other shine by:
Amplifying one another. When the women of the Obama administration wanted to be heard by male colleagues in the White House, they banded together to “amplify” each other’s contributions. When one woman made a point in a meeting, her colleague repeated it and credited her for the idea. The men quickly started listening.
Informing one another. A study published in the Harvard Business Review found that women greatly benefit from an inner circle of women contacts who provide an insider’s perspective about organizations and opportunities that help them land higher level positions.
Mentoring one another. Helping a junior colleague climb the corporate ladder can increase your visibility within the organization, keep you more informed and give you a sense of satisfaction.
